Chapter 2: the introduction...not?

"Oh my gosh, Aimenh, what on earth are you doing, lying on the ground like that!?" his mother cried.

Aimenh dimly heard her voice, and forced himself awake.

     "...Uh..."

He tried to push himself up and off the floor, but his body screamed in protest each time he moved.

     "Aahh...Ow, dang it..."

"Aimenh, I knew something was the matter! Let me see--strange, you don't have a fever--should I call the school? Tell them you're not well?"

     "Ugh...Sure...Yeah, thanks."

"I'll be right back--you change and try to get into bed."

Aimenh's mother pattered off to the phone downstairs. Having only one child, and living in an era where the child death rate was getting higher every day, she was just a little overprotective of Aimenh. The son in question groaned and finally got up, aching all over.

"Pike...You still there? Or did I really get hit by the car?"

A white blob appeared on the wall. It grew to a hat, and Pike's spirit-body followed.

"Aimenh! You woke up surprisingly fast."

"Okay, now that I'm conscious, tell me exactly what happened last night."

"Of course. Let's see, last night you held a spirit like it was solid for the first time in your life, correct?"

     "...Yeah..."

"That, I believe, is caused by a Work. Do you remember the feeling?"

     "Yeah."

"Try to summon the feeling again. It shouldn't be difficult."

Aimenh sighed. He hoped nothing like the failed attempt at possession would happen again. Closing his eyes, he pulled the feeling to the surface of his mind. Pike was right--it wasn't difficult at all.

"Open your eyes, Aimenh, and look down."

He obeyed. A sun was shining underneath his feet--or at least, the outline resembled a sun. In the center, surrounded by a ring of some strange written language, was a symbol.

     "The heck...is this!?"

"It's your Work's symbol. Each one is different. You definitely have a Work, but you can't tell just from the symbol. Most likely you're a Soulworker, though."

     "...Like a shamman? [shaman...shamen??] That's kinda cool..."

"However, using your Work drains life energy. The passive side, which in your case would probably be being able to see spirits, requires almost no energy. The active side, like actually holding one, requires much more. Which is why you'll need a lot of training to be able to use it all the time."

"Ugh. Why didn't you tell me earlier? There's a good and bad side to everything, huh..."

You can guess why Pike didn't reply to this.

"Say, you had a Work, didn't you? What was it?"

Aimenh's mother started up the stairs then, and he clamped his mouth shut and hurriedly changed and dove into bed, wincing.

For the sake of avoiding boredom I'll skip this part. You will find that I do that a lot, since at this point a great deal of Aimenh's life is boring. So suffice it to say that Aimenh only went back to school the next day, feeling very awkward [he walks to school], because a big, white, obnoxiously talkative glob was floating alongside him.

     "Uh...Pike?"

     "Yeah?"

     "Why're you following me?"

"I'm curious to see what your school's like. I haven't gone to school in forever. You know, I used to be the student council president in my old school. And then I transfered, into Shimon [katekyo hitman rebooooooooooooooooooooooorn!!! and no there's only one o, sorry] High School--"

     "Shimon!?"

Instant death. Because, of course, he was the only one who could see Pike, and if he shouted like that in the middle of a slightly crowded sidewalk (which he just did), people would think he was crazy, especially with such a weird word. He clamped a hand over his mouth and walked a little faster.

"Sorry," Pike said apologetically. Or at least it sounded slightly apologetic; you could never tell with the uber-simplified faces of souls.

"'Salright," Aimenh mumbled from behind his hand. "You'll see."

     "See what?"

Aimenh took his hand off his mouth and just stared at him coldly. They traveled the rest of the way to school in an awkward silence.
