Preface

Well, crap. There was going to be hell to pay for this. I ghosted closer and found the reason for all the havoc. I began grumbling to myself, probably not a good sign but I did not pay attention to that small detail. The capital city of Thumalsa was destroyed. Bodies were burned beyond recognition, many just a pile of ashes. All I could do was blow their ashes away. The only person who could have done this was the Fire witch, and she would be long gone by now.

"Wait," I thought. There had not been any signs of life five minutes ago. Now, as I looked into his eyes, I knew he thought I had done this. He was going to spread word that it was me. I took a step forward. He ran. I forced a wall of wind around his retreating figure. He was stuck. I started forward again.

Chapter 1

Water...wet...cold... The wind spoke to me, as it had for many years now. I was one of The Four, a group of girls who could talk to the elements of the earth. Wind was my gift; the others had earth, water, and fire. We were the most dangerous and most respected people on the planet, and none of us had ever met another.

My mission was to find the other three. I knew nothing of them but their gifts, and that could get me nowhere. I still had to try.

Water...wet...cold...rain...clouds...gray... No one else knew of our devastatingly beautiful gifts, and that was how I liked it. I could walk in the streets of Psaileme without fingers pointed at me. Almost a century ago, a Fire witch told the people of her village about the incredible magic she possessed, and the people were so scared of her that they put a reward on her head and she was soon dead. The Four kept their powers a secret from then on.

But then the rumors started, and they were all true. Rumors that The Four were back, the magical blood flowing again. Rumors that we were going to join together. And rumors that we had powers never known to The Four before.

     "Isabelle!"

I whirled around, facing the speaker.

"Isi, I've been looking all over for you. Why are you out in the street?"

"I apologize," I said, my light brown hair whipping around me, "I needed fresh air. What do you need, Mistress?"

"Get back inside, girl, I have work for you." The Mistress stomped back into her tavern. I smiled to myself. Her mood always changed. By the time I got inside, she would probably be perfectly happy.

I stepped over the threshold, heading straight towards the counter. The Mistress was there, simply waiting for me.

"I'm here, ma'am," I said. She turned and looked at me. "What would you like me to do?"

She stared at me another minute before saying, "First, I need you to go upstairs and clean the rooms. After that, come back down and take over this counter. Do you need room keys?"

"Yes, ma'am. Wait, please." I turned to look at the back room. Wind came from behind me to go quickly into the room. I thought of the keys, and seconds later I heard jingling as they landed in my waiting hands. I smiled up at the Mistress. She turned away and started mumbling under her breath.

I quickly climbed up the stairs to the tavern rooms. The tavern was fairly small with only about fifteen rooms. It normally took little more than an hour to clean every room. Today was absolutely no different. Within the hour I was back downstairs ready to take over the counter.

I stayed at the tavern until the end of my shift. I finished cleaning the countertop and looked up at my mistress, who was putting chairs on top of the tables.

"Mistress?" She grunted at me. "I need to take a few months off." At this point she looked at me, incredulous. "I want to explore the continent a little and practice with my wind. I also kinda wanna start my search for the other Three. That might also take me out of the continent. That would be okay, though, it would just take longer and-"

My mistress put her hand up, stopping my babbling. "I get it, child. So you're still stuck on this search, eh? Well then, go ahead, I suppose. Just don't whine at me if you don't have your job when you get back."

I nodded and looked up at her. "I understand," I told her. I ran and gave her a hug. "Thank you, Mistress!" I felt her arms wrap around me and she squeezed me back.

"You're very welcome, girl. Now go get your bags packed if you're going to be going away." I felt wetness on the top of my head. I realized she was crying.

     "Mistress!"

"I am quite fine, dear. Now, go on."

I ran up stairs to collect my few belongings. I did not have many clothes. The wind could create clothing that could be warm or cool, depending on the weather and my body temperature, but the clothes the wind made could only be light blue or white. The material was really wind, it just did not look it.

My knapsack packed, I made my way back downstairs and to the front door. I looked behind me.

     "Farewell, Mistress."

          Mistress:

She could not believe Isi had sprung this on her so fast. Isi was just as good as her second daughter. But as her girl walked out the door and turned to say farewell, Isi's Mistress knew that she would move on. She had to move on. Ise will be fine, she tried to convince herself feebly, but tears welled up in her eyes even as she thought this. No crying!

          Isi:

As I walked out the door, I knew I could not look back. If I did, my tears would spill over. My Mistress surely did not need to see that. I had to be strong.

It was time to think about the journey ahead. I had a long way to go, and I still needed to come up with some sort of strategy, some plan. Instinct told me that I had to go through the Field of Dreams successfully. Shoot!! No one had ever done that before; everyone just somehow got lost, so most people stayed away. I had never actually been to The Field, let alone just see what it looked like. At the moment, things were looking bad for me.

There was a chance that I might do better if I had a companion. We could keep each other awake, and, if The Field was really big, one could sleep while the other kept watch. It was a good enough plan, I just needed to find someone willing enough to go with me.

I snorted. Like that was going to happen.

But maybe, just maybe, I could make a new friend. And maybe they would trust me enough to go... And maybe Parah was made of cat cheese.

oohhh that's so cool. wind-clothes...they could be, like, invinsible armor! XD
mistress's character's supposed to be gruff, taciturn, but w/ a really soft heart, right? i think in this, the soft-heartedness is a tad overdone. and fast.
