And Down the Mighty Fall

She came first, slipping past, unnoticed

Softly she whispered in his ear

Told him of all he could have

If he would just

Reach

Out

He heeded her words, and a great empire he built

Never satisfied, always wanting

He wanted everything

Took everything

More, more

And more

Then came the next, and together with the first

Promised him power, control, strength

Trapping him in a daze

A haze of desire

Under the spell

He fell

The third held him up, tying him to his possessions

Binding him to the objects, to his work

Until he could see nothing other

Than their gilded shine

And he couldn’t bear

 To let go

His power was insurmountable, he stood at the top

As he reveled in his glory, the fourth slipped in

Whispering words of flattery and praise

Telling him he was the greatest,

The mightiest; infecting him

With her poison

But nothing lasts forever, and his position was threatened

By another, led the same way as he

In the midst of this chaos

The fifth finally came

Pushing him

Forward

The last took her places by her brothers and sisters

Taunting him into a passionate rage

Blinded, yet still trying to continue

Turning the wrong way

Each and every

Time

The five of them surrounded him, whispering their words

Pulling and pushing, taunting and flattering

Filling his mind with everything they said

Until his great empire

Came tumbling

Down

O Waheguru!

And so in the end

Even the mightiest fall

Guide us so we do not fall to our vices

Give us the strength to fight temptation

Guru Nanak, please lead us down the right path
